1. The period of anxiety-based consumerism that warms up during October and begins officially at midnight, October 31st, every year, lasting until midnight December 25th.
Etymology
The holiday seasons of Thanksgiving and Christmas were kept separate for many years, but beginning in the late 1990's and continuing into the 21st century their fusion solidified. Their overbearing sense of familial obligation and the heavy use of Pavlovian commercial musical cues serve to meld these events into a national frenzy of wasted resources and empty ritual known as "Holiday Spirit."
